Jan Brueghel (3c Galileo – Devoted To You, by Danehill Dancer) backed up an impressive debut win with a successful step up to Group 3 level at the Curragh on Saturday.
An eight length winner over course and distance of ten furlongs last month, Aidan O’Brien’s charge was sent off favourite under Ryan Moore for the International Stakes. Settled in second from an early stage, he was asked to quicken from three furlongs out and ridden to challenge a furlong later. He ran on well to lead inside the final 110 yards, going on to win by a neck, with the front pair finishing four and a half lengths clear of the remainder.
“We knew he had improved a lot from the last day and that he’d stay further but we weren’t sure about the ground,” O’Brien later noted. “We were thinking of coming here and then on to Goodwood and then going to the Leger.”
Owned by Coolmore partners with Westerberg, the son of Galileo is a full-brother is Irish Derby winner Sovereign. The pair are out of Barronstown’s homebred Group performer Devoted To You, whose filly by St Mark’s Basilica sells at the upcoming Goffs Orby Sale.
