Horatio Nelson was bred to
be a star and he didn’t disappoint. After winning
his maiden and a Stakes race at the Curragh, he
led all the way to win the Superlative Stakes Gr.
2 at Newmarket. He next claimed the Prix Jean Luc Lagardere Gr. 1 at Longchamp.
A fortnight later in the Dewhurst Stakes Gr. 1, he had desperately bad luck in running and only just failed to peg back subsequent Derby winner Sir Percy by a short head. He looked
set to join the rank of legends as a three-year-old,
only to meet with tragedy in the Epsom Derby.

Van Gogh’s impressive Group 1 success in the Criterium International saw the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt crowned Europe’s Cartier Champion 2-Year-Old Colt. A four-length winner of the mile contest, the half-brother to Horatio Nelson won a Curragh maiden in September and had been placed in three Group races. Entered in all the 2021 Classics, there is surely more to come from the son of American Pharaoh as a three-year-old.
